This home office addition is over an existing garage structure in the Silver Lake area of Los Angeles. The house was 80 years old at the time. Poured concrete 12” thick walls with no re-bars in existence, next to the property line with no side setbacks. These were some of the severe challenges for adding an addition above. The project is figured in detail in the Case Study section of the website.
In addition to the code challenges, the new structure had to be “in tune” with the strong appearance of the existing building’s street façade next to it. Windows propositions, overall scale and design elements were meant to complement the existing Spanish Revival original residence. The new addition serves as the sDs – Sharkov Design Studio office.
