Commercial Interiors

Rehabilitation Center waiting roomElizabeth Bougart-Sharkov, principal architect at Sharkov Design Studio,  always looks to create an architectural environment that will be “invigorating, inspiring, relaxing and healing.” She strongly believes that for any kind of business, a thorough understanding of functionality and appropriately tuned aesthetics lead to a fine final product

Elizabeth has created numerous commercial environments for clients including small restaurants, medical clinics, and dental offices. Indeed commercial interiors call for a unique kind of design skill which often entails carving space for a variety of functions from completely unfinished floor plates. Commercial renovations, on the other hand, often call for working within existing parameters.

Rehabilitation center location on the floor plateThis rehabilitation center (above right) occupies approximately 3,500 square feet of an existing commercial building floor and includes reception and waiting area, chiropractic exam rooms, gym, business offices, and staff conference and recreation rooms with a kitchenette.

The design challenge was to work within the existing envelope of the building (top left) to create an entirely new highly functional environment which suits the rehabilitative purpose of the center given the limits of the buildable space.Rehabilitation center in the pre-construction phase

Rehabilitation center floor planOn one hand that meant incorporating into the floor plan as many exam rooms as possible to achieve the necessary functionality of any medical practice (bottom left).

But the client wanted to capitalize on the inherent advantages of this nearly-perfect space for healing and rehabilitation purposes too. Rehabilitation center layout maximizes the viewMaximizing access to the view (right) was considered critical, for example; unlike many medical practices where the reception is an afterthought, here the spacious reception area is positioned to highlight the fantastic view of the Hollywood Hills.

The spacious gym and state-of-the-art equipment are both key to the rehabilitation experience.  Fulfilling this design program is an example of how a limited-space project can offer solutions that meet certain aesthetic goals and achieve critical functionality.
